With two weekly return services, the Inlander provides a sustainable and scenic way to travel. Pack your bags, grab your camera, and get ready for a train journey you’ll never forget!

You’ll find plenty of space to stretch out, cosy up with a book, or simply gaze out of the window at the passing scenery as the lush coastal environment gradually gives way to the striking landscapes of the outback.

Charters Towers: Gold Rush Tales and Historic Charm

A few hours into your journey, the Inlander makes its first major stop at Charters Towers, a town that still wears its gold rush heritage proudly. Wander through the historic streets, where grand 19th-century buildings tell tales of fortune and adventure. If you have time, check out the Venus Gold Battery, Australia’s largest surviving battery relic from the 1800s, or catch a glimpse of local life at one of the charming cafes. It’s the perfect blend of history, culture, and a bit of old-time charm.

Hughenden: Dinosaurs and Dramatic Landscapes

Back on board, the train continues westward, rolling through fields of golden grass and wide-open plains. Hughenden, your next stop, is famous for its prehistoric treasures.

The Flinders Discovery Centre It’s a must-visit destination, featuring a life-sized replica of the Muttaburrasaurus – Queensland’s very own dinosaur! The town is adorned with dinosaur-inspired art installations, and the centre houses an array of fossils and a captivating exhibition on the region’s unique geology, offering a glimpse into a time when this now-arid land was once a vast inland sea.

Richmond: Kronosaurus Country

As the sun sets, casting a golden hue over the outback, you’ll arrive in Richmond, home to the extraordinary Kronosaurus Korner. This marine fossil museum houses one of the best-preserved collections of ancient underwater marine reptiles, including the Kronosaurus, a fearsome predator from the Cretaceous period. You will also find the newly unveiled Pterosaur, a true king of the sky!  It’s a captivating stop for anyone fascinated by the prehistoric past or intrigued by the wonders that lie beneath the earth.

Julia Creek: A Taste of Rural Life

The journey continues through the quiet town of Julia Creek, where life moves at a slower pace, and the stars shine a little brighter. While the train might not stop for long, you’ll get a real feel for the Aussie outback. Look out for the famous Julia Creek Dunnart, a tiny endangered marsupial found only in this region, and enjoy the wide-open spaces that stretch to the horizon.

Cloncurry: A Town with Heart

Further along the route is Cloncurry, affectionately known as “The Curry.” This town has a rich history, from being the birthplace of the Royal Flying Doctor Service to its connection with the great Australian explorers Burke and Wills. Stretch your legs and visit the John Flynn Place Museum to learn about the Flying Doctor’s origins or simply enjoy the laid-back vibe of this friendly outback community.

Mount Isa: Mining Marvels and Fossil Wonders

Finally, the Inlander rolls into Mount Isa, a city that seems to rise up out of the desert. Known as the “oasis of the outback,” Mount Isa is a hub of mining activity and is home to the Riversleigh Fossil Discovery Centre. The centre offers a hands on insight into one of the world’s richest fossil fields, where you can see remains of ancient mammals, birds, and reptiles that roamed Australia millions of years ago.

Consider joining a guided tour to discover how specimens are sorted, cleaned, and fossils are extracted from hard limestone in our Riversleigh fossil laboratory. This experience is both educational and engaging for the whole family, and you might even get the chance to try your hand at a virtual fossil dig!
