Eromanga Natural History Museum
Beginning at 9am, school students are invited to explore the extraordinary work taking place at the Eromanga Natural History Museum. Their visit begins with the 20‑minute Deep Time Dinosaurs to Today theatrette experience, where they will discover the evolutionary changes that shaped life on Earth before marvelling at how our prehistoric giants are uncovered and prepared in the museum’s working laboratories.
Students will then enjoy an exclusive virtual palaeontology session with Dr Scott Hocknull as he delves into the remarkable dinosaur discoveries of outback Queensland, including Australia’s largest dinosaurs and the ancient environments they inhabited around 90 million years ago. Dr Scott will also introduce the world’s largest marsupial, Diprotodon, and other megafauna species unearthed from extraordinary mass bone deposits near Eulo. Although these dinosaurs and megafauna lived tens of millions of years apart, both once called this region of Queensland home.
After a short morning tea break, students will head into the labs for a hands‑on fossil experience, applying their newly learned skills to help the museum reveal the secrets hidden within these ancient specimens. Activity sheets aligned to the Australian Curriculum v9 will accompany their learning. Following a big morning of discovery, students can enjoy their self‑catered lunch before heading to Knotsaurus Park, where they will hunt for their very own diprotodon teeth in the shadow of the giants that once roamed the outback.
