Muttaburrasaurus Interpretation Centre, Muttaburra – Visit Queensland’s Fossil Emblem

Step into Queensland’s deep-time story at the Muttaburrasaurus Interpretation Centre in Muttaburra, home to a life-sized replica of Muttaburrasaurus langdoni — Queensland’s official Fossil Emblem. The original fossil was discovered in 1963 by local grazier Doug Langdon while mustering near the Thomson River. Today, the fossil remains are housed at Queensland Museum in Brisbane, where restoration and research continue, while the impressive replica takes pride of place beside the Muttaburra Memorial Hall in Bruford Street. A replica leg bone can also be viewed at the local Post Office.

Muttaburra, located near the geographical centre of Queensland, proudly celebrates one of Australia’s most complete dinosaur discoveries. Although unearthed in 1963, Muttaburrasaurus langdoni was not formally named until 1981, as the bones were encased in extremely hard marine sediment that required nearly twenty years of careful mechanical and chemical preparation. The Interpretation Centre, officially opened on 11 September 2021, showcases the story of this remarkable discovery and the community behind it.

Entry by donation can be made at the Donation box inside. The community of Muttaburra uses donations to help keep maintaining the building.
