Digging at Dawn with Dr Dean Lomax Kronosaurus Korner – Richmond

Experience the thrill of fossil hunting in the cool of the Outback morning during Digging at Dawn — a hands-on field adventure shaped by millions of years of natural history.

Set in the fossil-rich landscapes of Richmond, participants will join fellow explorers in searching for prehistoric marine remains left behind by the ancient Eromanga Sea, which once covered much of inland Queensland. Beneath your boots lies a world of giant marine reptiles, long-extinct predators and ancient ocean life waiting to be uncovered.

This exclusive experience is hosted by internationally acclaimed palaeontologist Dr Dean Lomax, who is visiting Australia for the first time as part of Queensland Dinosaur Week. Dr Lomax is recognised globally for his research on ancient marine reptiles, particularly ichthyosaurs — powerful, dolphin-shaped predators that dominated the world’s oceans during the age of dinosaurs. He has described new species, led international excavations and worked with museums around the world to reconstruct and interpret some of the most important marine reptile discoveries of the last decade.

Under Dr Lomax’s guidance, participants will gain rare insight into how palaeontologists locate fossil sites, carefully excavate specimens and piece together evidence to reconstruct “real-life monsters” of the Early Cretaceous. Along the way, he will share stories from global fossil expeditions and explain how Queensland’s marine fossils fit into the broader international palaeo story.

Whether you’re a seasoned fossil enthusiast or simply curious about life beneath the surface, Digging at Dawn offers a truly authentic field experience — combining science, discovery and the magic of the Outback.
